FerAppease® is a topical stress-mitigation solution for cattle, designed to reduce threat perception and its downstream effects. It contains a synthetic analogue of the Maternal Bovine Appeasing Substance (MBAS), a naturally occurring compound secreted by lactating cows to calm their offspring. By activating the vomeronasal gland, FerAppease® desensitises stress pathways in the brain, reducing anxiety-driven behaviours and improving overall health and productivity.
How FerAppease® works
Stress negatively impacts cattle health, productivity, and profitability by triggering cortisol release, immunosuppression, and metabolic inefficiencies. The MBAS analogue in FerAppease® stimulates the vomeronasal organ, reducing amygdala activity responsible for threat perception.
This lowers cortisol levels, reducing stress-induced inflammation and metabolic disruption.
Cattle exhibit calmer behaviour, improved feed efficiency, and better overall health outcomes.
Lower stress leads to reduced flight zones and better resilience against disease, including BRD.
When to use FerAppease®
FerAppease® can be applied before or during stressful management practices, including:
Parturition and weaning.
Breeding and dry-off.
Processing, dehorning and castration.
Transportation and commingling.
Reimplantation and revaccinations.
Topical application to healthy cattle.
The active ingredient (MBAS) is assimilated by the vomeronasal gland located in the nose of the animal.
Apply before stressful events for best results.
Always follow veterinary recommendations for optimal usage.
FERA Diagnostics and Biologicals is an innovative animal health company focused on improving livestock welfare. Their key product, FerAppease®, is a synthetic mBAS analogue that helps reduce stress and support calmer, more productive cattle. Visit feraah.com to learn more.
When applied, FerAppease® is absorbed through the vomeronasal organ located in the nasal cavity. This absorption leads to desensitisation of regions in the brain responsible for threat perception, resulting in reduced stress responses.
FerAppease® is recommended during events that can cause stress in cattle, such as weaning, transportation, castration, dehorning, branding, vaccination, commingling, and other management or physiological stressors.
FerAppease® begins to work immediately after application, with effects lasting up to 14 days. This duration covers most short-term stress events in cattle.
FerAppease® is oil-based and should be applied to dry animals. It's recommended to allow at least 30 minutes for absorption before the animal gets wet.
FerAppease® has a shelf life of two years. It should be stored at room temperature between 15°C and 30°C (59°F to 86°F). Do not refrigerate or freeze.
